What are fruit flies? Are they dangerous?

Besides from being just a nuisance, fruit flies have the potential of contaminating food with some bacteria and other pathogens. In order to avoid a fruit fly infestation in your house, store produce and food in air-tight containers or in your refrigerators and inspect your fruits or vegetables when brought into the house. Furthermore, es you should establish a schedule to regularly clean the drain lines, your garbage disposals and any other location where food waste  -Αποφράξεις Μαρούσι– is gathering.

Why do you have fruit flies in your house?

Fruit flies are often infesting homes with rotting, ripe, or decayed fruit and vegetables. They also can be found where fermented items such as beer, liquor, and wine are lying. Fruit flies will breed and develop in drains, garbage disposals, trash bins, and  buckets used for mopping. By the time they begin reproducing indoors, the females are able to lay approximately 500 eggs and these eggs will hatch in just 24-30 hours after being laid by the female.

This fact makes the pests difficult and almost impossible to contain. The first two visible signs of fruit fly activity in your house would be the existence of adult flies and the pupae. Adult flies are often noticed flying around in kitchen counter tops or trash cans very close to decaying fruit or vegetables. They also are very attracted to liquor and beer bottles that you might have disposed.

The mature larvae of the fruit flies, crawl out of the breeding material in order to pupate in a dry  spot nearby. They are also often mistaken for cockroach and rodent droppings, but they can easily be differentiated because they have a pair of horns on one end of their pupae.

Ways to get rid of fruit flies

Bacterial digesters are claimed to be effective if you pour them down infested drains. Cleaners that contain bleach or pure bleach products can sometimes be effective too; although chlorine rarely stays in the drain –Αποφράξεις Αργυρούπολη- long enough to “fight” the accumulated slime that attracts the fruit flies. Another option, although not proven 100% effective at eliminating a proper infestation, traps for fruit flies may provide you with a temporary relief by trapping a small number of the adults.

Natural ways to get rid of fruit flies

If you do not wish to use bleach or any other material that is toxic, you could try a more natural approach to get rid of the fruit flies. If you have an infested drain, you could try the vinegar method. Pour a generous amount of vinegar down your drain and let it sit for a good 10 to 15 minutes. After you rinse it off, you might notice less flies.

Another good tip is to use hot or even boiling water after you are done washing the dishes. As the fruit flies are attracted by the pulp and masses that are created in your pipes so the hot water will help removing most of them.

Drain cleaning services

In order to avoid any fruit fly infestation, you will need to have a clean drain. In order to do so, you will need to call a professional drain cleaning crew Αποφράξεις Πειραιάς-, which will take care of your plumbing system and make sure that they clean every pipe and especially these pipes that are connected to your kitchen drain.

If you are living in the countryside, you will need to have the service at least once per year and preferably at the end of the summer so that you will get rid of every piece of food stuck in your garbage disposal and your pipes. Houses in the countryside are facing the problem of the decaying foot under the trees which may end up in the drains outside, so the infestation is larger. Having your plumbing system cleaned once per year will save you from a possible fruit fly infestation.

Prevention of getting fruit flies

It can be quite difficult to destroy the home of a common fruit fly. Fruit flies are attracted to any products that contain sugar and organic materials. As their name suggests, they are usually found infesting fruit and vegetables. Apart from that, fruit flies are also capable to breed in decaying meat, trash cans and even large spills of soda and alcohol. Any fruit that you bring at home should be stored in the refrigerator if possible.

Wipe the counters in your kitchen, clean any spills and empty your trash cans every day to help prevent fruit fly infestations.

The first step when you need to address a fruit fly infestation is the anihilation of their feeding and breeding grounds. Fruit flies usually lay their eggs inside rotten fruit and other soft, sweet, organic materials and humid spaces. If you recognize a fruit fly infestation in your kitchen, immediately throw away every over-ripe or damaged fruit. Any subsequently purchased fruit or vegetable should be kept in the refrigerator or in containers until the fruit fly infestation stops.

If there is no fruit or vegetable issue in your kitchen, check your garbage and recycling bins. Fruit flies may also use unclean or clogged drains as their breeding grounds. Outdoor drains are probable sources of yard-based fruit flies, as are overripe fruits that fall under the trees and decay.

After isolating the fly breeding ground, you may use control methods. Although eradication may require more than one or two treatments, the lack of food and smell of decaying fruit available to fly populations will eventually cause them to die out.
